As a therapist, I’m obviously biased towards therapy. I believe that therapy is a wonderful tool that can be helpful in many ways to many different people. To me, the beginning of a new year always has a special feel to it. It offers a fresh start and the opportunity to re-align with our personal goals and evaluate what areas of our lives we want to tweak. For many, the stamina of a new year’s resolution tends to decline as the weeks go by, leading to an eventual fizzle. But it doesn’t have to be that way. One way to approach your goals differently in 2019 is to start meeting with a therapist. So here’s my call to arms, my list of reasons why I think starting therapy is a great way to approach your resolutions this year.
4 Reasons Why You Should Start Seeing a Therapist in 2019:
Fresh perspective- It’s impossible to see ourselves objectively because we’re just too close to the subject. A therapist is an unbiased person with professional experience helping people to achieve their personal goals. She may be able to offer some insight on what has been getting in your way and some creative suggestions on how to approach your goals that you hadn’t thought about.
Accountability- A therapist won’t judge you if you don’t follow-through on your goals. She is there to support and encourage you. However, having someone who is going to check in with your regularly about your progress and question you if you aren’t taking steps forward can help you to stay on track.
Innovative suggestions- Although you can surely come up with your plan and action steps on your own, your therapist may have some suggestions for how to work towards your goals that may be a bit outside of the box. Part of a therapist’s work is to be creative in helping people to make change, since it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ process.
Be Savvy with your health insurance- Ok, I’m kind of cheating with this one, because it won’t necessarily help you to reach your goals. Most health insurance plans re-start on January 1, which means that if you have a deductible, you have to meet it before your insurance will start picking up some of the tab. Start off your year by meeting with all of your health providers to maximize the use of your insurance later in the year.
